Shoemakers & Boot Makers

Shortlist of four makers building shoes and boots by hand and meant to be resoled, not replaced.

Good footwear is buy-it-once, fix-it-forever. The makers below build by hand, weld or stitch their soles so they can be rebuilt, and last decades with care. Two are traditional Bavarian and dress shoemakers, two are mountain boot specialists. Keeping a shortlist so I know who to call when a pair finally wears out.

Mountain & hiking boots

Meindl has made shoes in Kirchanschöring (Upper Bavaria) since 1928, with a family shoemaking line that reaches back to 1683. It runs as a factory with handcrafted steps, producing over a million pairs a year of alpine, trekking and outdoor boots. Boots are resoleable: Meindl runs its own repair and resole service at HQ. It also makes traditional Bavarian Haferl shoes (Trachtenschuhe). Hiking boots roughly 130-260 €, premium leather trekking and mountain models 260-350 €+. A Haferl runs around 300 €. The sweet spot if you want German build quality off the shelf and a brand that will resole what you buy.

Limmer Boots has built hiking and mountaineering boots since 1919, when Peter Limmer Sr. started in Bavaria before the family moved to the US. Now run as Peter Limmer & Sons in Intervale, New Hampshire. The signature design is a one-piece leather upper with a single seam on the instep, built to last 20-40 years and built to be rebuilt. Two routes: stock "ready to order" boots (Limmer Standard around $525, factory seconds near $250), or fully custom bespoke boots made on a personal last. Custom pairs run $1,600-$1,800 with a backlog of about 2 years. Resoling is a core service. The closest thing in the US to a heirloom mountain boot.

Traditional & handmade shoes

Trautmann Schuhwerk is Martin Trautmann's atelier in Munich. He is an orthopaedic shoemaker master (Orthopädieschuhmachermeister) who combines bespoke shoemaking (Maßschuhe) with orthopaedic fitting. Everything is handmade to measure in-house, with natural and sustainable materials, plus orthopaedic adjustments and high-quality repairs. This is the bespoke shoemaker, not "Trautmann Einlagen" (the custom-insole business at trautmann-einlagen.de) - different maker, same surname. The call when I want a single pair built around my own feet.

Schuh-Bertl München is a Munich shoemaker specialising in stitched footwear: welted (rahmengenäht) and double-stitched (zwiegenäht) construction. He makes business shoes, boots, loafers, leather sneakers with an anatomical footbed, and original Haferlschuhe for men and women, plus one-piece shoes cut from a single piece of leather. Everything is handmade in Germany, fully repairable, and Bertl resoles it personally in his workshop. Also stocks horn shoehorns, deer Lederhosen and handmade belts. Range is mostly ready-to-wear with in-store fitting rather than full bespoke. The traditional Bavarian option with proper welted soles.
