Positioning Mechanical-only independent

Oris was founded in 1904 in Hölstein, Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian. The company initially produced movements for other brands before making complete watches.

Oris stopped making quartz watches in 2003, committing entirely to mechanical movements. The brand has since developed in-house calibers: Calibre 400 (5-day power reserve, 10-year service interval) and Calibre 401 (with GMT).

The Big Crown pilot watch dates to 1938. The Aquis dive line is the current flagship for professional diving. Oris is family-owned (Dräer family) and independent — not part of any luxury group.

Pricing runs €1,500–6,000. Oris targets buyers who want serious mechanical watches from an independent manufacturer at prices below the major Swiss luxury brands.
