Hanhart was founded in 1882 in Gütenbach, Black Forest, Germany by Johann Hanhart and Georg Schmiedel. The company started with precision stopwatches and expanded into aviation chronographs.

Hanhart developed single-push chronographs in the 1920s and supplied pilot timers through the mid-20th century. After reunification challenges, the brand returned to mechanical chronographs around 2010 with the Primus line, using manual pushers and levers rather than cam-operated systems.

Still family-owned and independently operated. Uses modified ETA Valjoux movements. Known for dial legibility, shock resistance, and chronograph reliability. Pricing runs €1,000–5,000. The HD12 proprietary hardened steel is a recent addition for scratch-resistant cases.
