Grand Seiko was established in 1960 as Seiko's high-end line. It became operationally independent in 2017 and has been a separately listed company since 2021.

The brand's mechanical precision standard requires ±3 seconds/day or better — stricter than COSC. Grand Seiko developed Zaratsu polishing, a mirror-finishing technique that produces perfectly flat, distortion-free surfaces. It requires years of training and is performed by hand.

Three movement types: mechanical (9SA5 caliber, ±5 sec/day), Spring Drive (9RA2, ±15 sec/year), and quartz (9F, ±10 sec/year). Spring Drive is unique to Grand Seiko — a mechanical mainspring powers the watch while an electronic regulator controls accuracy.

Manufacturing takes place at two studios: Shizukuishi (mechanical) and Shinshu (Spring Drive). Pricing starts around €4,000 and extends past €50,000 for limited editions.
