Background
The Royal Oak was designed by Gérald Genta in 1972 as the first luxury sports watch in steel, breaking convention at a time when high-end watches were expected to be gold and thin. The octagonal bezel with exposed hexagonal screws and integrated bracelet became instant design icons. The blue Tapisserie dial—a grid of small squares unique to the brand—has remained the signature aesthetic across decades.
