#CareerPlaybook 024: Interviewing for a new job

How to sell yourself

👷🏼‍♂️ WORK IN PROGRESS 👷🏼‍♂️

12 Dec 2022

I haven't interviewed for a new job in a while, but I've been on the other side of the table a few times.

Here are a few things to do when interviewing for a new job:

Preparation is key

• deep dive on the company, product, and team
• prepare intelligent questions that aren't already answered in the job description

ALWAYS treat it like you want it

Articulate your unique value proposition

• talk in numbers, outcomes, impact. Don't just recite your job responsibilities (value selling vs. feature selling)
• use the power of storytelling
• be brief, to the point, and engaging in your answers

Share stories

Know your numbers

End with a strong close

• be blunt and ask the interviewer for feedback: "what makes me stand out compared to other candidates? what reservations do you have about me so far?"
• address their reservations right away to show off your objection handling skills
• lock in a date for the next step

Follow up

• send an email (or even better: a video) to summarise your main takeaways, how you can add value to the team, and the agreed next step
• add everyone on Linkedin and engage with their content
• follow up if you don't hear anything. Be politely persistent, stay top of mind.

The most successful Job seekers have one big differentiator..

✅ They're excellent at communicating their VALUE.

This means:

1️⃣ Expressing clearly what problems you solve
2️⃣ Demonstrating the achievements you’ve had in the past
3️⃣ Describing your potential for future success and the outcomes you offer
